From mailers, publications and packaging, to gig posters, my job as a graphic designer is to invite the viewer in to learn more about what it is we’re representing. If it’s a magazine article design, my purpose is to entice the viewer to want to read the article. If it’s a gig (band/show poster), I want to create enough visual interest that the viewer will take the time to look at what the event is. Being that every shop window and mailbox are full of these sorts of pieces, it’s extremely challenging to create a piece that stands out in the sea of print materials.
That being said, graphic design isn’t just about another pretty poster. It’s about encompassing a big idea and solving a visual problem in such a way that the viewer never knows there was a problem, and the big idea is exciting without being confusing.
